Tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth. There are many reasons why a tooth may have to be removed:
Extraction is often seen as the last resort, and therefore your dentist will always discuss any other available options to you.
Most extractions will be undertaken by your normal dentist at the practice. However, some extractions may require a referral to specialist or secondary care.
After an extraction, it is normal for a small amount of bleeding for the first 1-2 days, as well as some discomfort and possible stiffness of opening the jaws. Over the counter painkillers should help, and symptoms should soon improve, being resolved around 10 days after the treatment.
It is important to look after the extraction site following tooth removal to reduce the chance of postoperative complications such as bleeding, infection, dry socket and severe pain. Make sure you:
If you experience severe pain, significant bleeding or bleeding that will not stop, swelling, numbness (which remains after the anaesthetic has worn off) or any pus discharge following an extraction, please contact the practice for an emergency appointment.
