Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening is a highly effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surfaces. Teeth can be stained on the surface through food such as curry, and drinks such as tea, coffee and red wine. Smoking can also stain teeth.

Your dentist will be able to tell you whether you are suitable for treatment and will supervise it if you are. There are two ways of whitening teeth:

  1. Trays worn at home – customized trays are made which fit your mouth like a gum-shield. A small amount of the active ingredient is put in the trays and they are worn at home for several hours each day until the desired shade is reached – usually 1-2 weeks.
  2. Power whitening – this is done in one visit to the dentist and takes approximately one hour using ozone. This method considerably reduces any sensitivity. You will also be given trays to wear at home to “top-up”.

Some people find that their teeth can become slightly sensitive during tooth whitening. This does not usually last long and de-sensitizing agents can be used.

Tooth whitening can only whiten your existing natural teeth. It will not work on white fillings, crowns or veneers etc. These can, however, be replaced to match the newly whitened teeth.
